This car had sustained some crash damage in the tail panel at some point, and it appeared to have extended into the lower portions of the quarter panels. The damage wasn't obvious at first glance, but you could see the remnants in the trunk floor and the thick filler on the tail pan.

There was obvious evidence of previous repairs to the quarter panels, so we cut those pieces out and elected to repair the bottoms of the quarter panels rather than replace the entire panel. We tried to keep as much original GM sheet metal on this car as possible.
This is the lower quarter that was cut off.

And the backside showing the poor repair job…

MIG wire poking through a hole…

The other side.

Not as bad, but rusty and wrinkled.

We obtained some quarter patch panels from Classic Industries to make the repairs.

The damaged tail pan was carefully drilled out and removed.

A new tail pan was ordered from Classic Industries and screwed in place.

Trunk-view of the new tail panel.

A steel bar was made to act as a support to pull and align the trunk floor and the new tail panel. This will help ensure our bumper mounts are in the proper place.

Sometimes it’s better to replace the entire panel, other times a patch will suffice. In this case, the patch made more sense as the tip side of the quarter and the wheel houses were in good shape. Machinist's blue dye is used to help mark the area for cutting.

After the panel is welded in place and metal finished smooth.

Driver side:

A tack-welding process keeps the heat down, and later, the seam will be dressed on the inside of the panel to remove any evidence of the repair.

The rear tail panel was then finish welded and metal finished. Here, the fuel filler area and the lower seams are held with Cleco clamps.

The quarter to tail pan seam is modified to have a better fit than stock.

Plug and spot welding ensues…
