Back in the body shop, the crew installed the replacement fiberglass rear bumper cover and fitted it to the body.

Next, they block sanded the polyester, and the guide coat again revealed any high or low spots requiring attention.

The paint on this car posed a special challenge, because it is a multilayer Kandy. By their nature, Kandy colors are translucent colors sprayed over a bright base, typically gold or silver. Once the car is stayed in the base color, the Kandy color is applied in multiple coats until the desired final color is reached. Each layer of translucent Kandy color will deepen the hue.

We sprayed several test panels to match the color.

First came the gold base on a spray out card.

Then, we mixed in some gold flake with the House of Kolor Kandy Brandywine.

Here you can see the various test panels showing how the multiple layers of Kandy Brandywine affect the color. One panel was shot over a gold base, the other over a red base.

Although we used a 3M Sun Gun to illuminate the panels, it was best to see them in sunlight.

The thin panel below was sprayed when the car was painted the first time, before the accident.

Next, we prepped the panels for the last coat of primer and finally basecoat. Normally, we strip and spray the entire door shell, but in this case it was an insurance job, and they insurance company was not paying for anything extra, so we masked the areas to be hidden by the door panel when the car is finished.
