This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL rumbles thanks to a 460+ cubic inch 428 fed by two four barrel Holley carbs on top, and is shifted with a 4-speed manual transmission. The car came to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop or some basic maintenance, as well as bodywork and a re-spray. Follow the progress here!

The car came to our shop because the owner wasn’t sure about the tune-up on the dual quad stroker 428, and the front suspension felt a little “off”. We really liked the car, and put it on the rack for an inspection.

We noticed a few worn-out bushings, and the steering linkage was a little loose.

There was a little leak from the 4-speed or rear-main seal, but nothing major.

It looked like we would be doing some general maintenance on the car, until it was involved in a little “incident”. It turns out that the brake pedal pin was not properly retained in the master cylinder pushrod, and the pedal slipped out causing a brake failure.

The result was some minor damage to the nose of the car, and also to the doors of our paint booth.

We were all sick over the situation, but luckily, the car is insured with Hagerty and they were quick to help us with the repair plan.

Luckily, we have the capabilities to fix the car, and after many conversations and consideration, the owner wanted to take the car up a notch. Sometimes a bad thing can become a catalyst for improvement, so the car went into our body shop to begin a new journey.

In addition to the nose damage, the fender bumped the door.

The front sheetmetal was removed for repairs.

The glass and interior were removed and the dirty work began.

This car had a fairly recent paint job, so we elected to strip the top most layers and evaluate if we could repaint the car without stripping it all the way down to bare steel.

We discovered some body filler, but most of the car was pretty straight.

The floors are really solid in this car, which is nice!

We found some rust in the lower quarter panel on the driver side, so it was removed and a steel panel repair was made.

The rough shape was formed with the old panel still in place on the car.

Then the rusty area was removed, and the inside structure was repaired.

The new panel was slowly tack welded in place with an HTP MIG 200 to keep the warpage to a minimum.
