Welding along a contour line can be a good idea, as the shape of the steel is more rigid in this area.

After some grinding, the repair panel is skimmed with filler and blocked smooth.

One upgrade that our customer wanted was a fiberglass teardrop hood. These are known more commonly as the Thunderbolt hood, but many companies make them for the full size Galaxie as well. These hoods can be challenging, because they are primarily intended for racing and are not show car quality. Although this car was not intended to be a full-on show car, we knew the dark blue color would show off any imperfections, so much time was spent making the hood fit the car. And early challenge was making the crown of the windshield edge match the cowl shape.

The rear edge of the hood was cut and a steel support structure was bonded in with fiberglass and resin to help match the arch of the cowl.

When the fit was close, the fiberglass was blended and sanded smooth.

Then the top side of the hood was skim coated with fiberglass reinforced body filler to build up the thickness of the hood.

After much sanding and shaping, the hood was looking much better, free of waves, low spots, and it better matched the fenders.

Next, the Galaxie was masked, cleaned, and sent to the paint booth for a coat of Axalta sealer and high-build primer as the beginning of the new paint job.

Back in the body shop, the primer was treated with a black guide coat before more block sanding began.

The fenders and other parts were treated to the same proces.

The hood was also primed with high-build primer.

There were no tears on this teardrop hood… maybe “Tears Of A Clown?”

Craig begins block-sanding the guide coat, even in the trunk jambs.
