Our 1971 Olds Cutlass S - nicknamed the S71 - is about to start the transformation from junk to funk. From pile to Style. Here's part 1 of the saga where we take a look at the car, it's history, and try to formulate a plan for building a fast, fun car that stays true to the original.

We obtained this car from the original owner, and it was interesting to learn the story about how this car came to be.

Back in 1971, the original owner was shopping for a high-performance Oldsmobile, but he could not afford to buy a new 442. Instead, he ended up buying a Cutlass "S "model, and added performance options to it until he reached the limit of his budget.

These upgrades included Super Stock II wheels, a fiberglass Outside Air Induction (OAI) hood, a four-speed transmission, bucket seats, disc brakes, and white hood stripes, but he could not afford the 455 cube Oldsmobile V8 found in the 442. Instead, this car came with a 350 cubic inch V8 and a four barrel carburetor.

He had driven it as his daily driver for many years, and it arrived in our shop with approximately 120,000 miles on the odometer and it was disassembled, as the original owner began a restoration but was not prepared to perform all the work himself.

Because this Oldsmobile had seen daily use for so long, it had its share of rust. Both of the quarter panels were rusty, the trunk floor had rusted out, and the fenders were rusty at the bottoms. These are all common places for GM "A" bodies too rust.

The dash top was also a victim of rust eating it away below the dash pad.

The first steps were to disassemble the car, bagging and tagging all of the parts and putting the body shell to a rotisserie in preparation for paint stripping.

Even though it sat for many years, the car still ran and drove.

We removed the front sheetmetal in one assembly to save time and to keep the parts together.

The body was lifted off the frame, and the floors seemed to be in pretty good shape.
