1971 Olds "S71" Dash Panel Repair
Read more...The original dash panel was pretty rusty on our 1971 Olds "S71" project.   These cars tended to hold water and moisture under the stainless windshield trim, and that would cause big rust holes to form under the trim, and then the driver's feet would get wet.    The sheet metal to repair this area is not yet reproduced, so we contacted Desert Valley Auto Parts to have a section removed from a rust-free parts car to install in our Oldsmobile.

1971 Olds "S71" Quarter Panel Repair
Read more...The quarter panels were next on the list of repairs on the "S71" Olds project.   We were contemplating this area for a while, as the original steel had some rust in the wheel well lip and along the bottom edge, but it was otherwise in great shape.    We elected to do a minimally-invasive repair and use part of a replacement quarter panel skin from YearOne to do the job.

Kelle's '54 Chevy Truck Blog #4 - Floor It!
Read more...Kelle's '54 Chevy truck is becoming more solid by the day.    This time, resto tech Randy Stange patches up the rusty floor in an unconventional act of auto recycling.   All we can say is that the Camaro crowd may not like this one.   In reality, no re-usable body panels were hurt in this fix, but the steel will go on living in the truck, and that's what really matters, right?   The kick panels are gettin' the fix as well.    Say goodbye to the Flintstone brakes!

1969 Chevelle "SS496" Blog 61: Fixing Details
Read more...The SS496 Chevelle project is still in the shop, but its completion is coming soon.     Today we addressed a few minor details that popped up after the initial SEMA build thrash, namely a leaking power steering pump reservoir and chasing a bizarre missing ground in the dash.    When we saw we could dim the high beams with the dash gauge dimmer, we knew we had a problem.    Luckily, that's all fixed now.    We still have to get the convertible top installed and do a wheel alignment, but this monster is almost ready for the road!

Kelle's '54 Chevy Truck Blog #3
Read more...Kelle's blue '54 Chevy had some issues griding gears, so her and her dad pulled another old 3-speed from a parts '49 Chevy truck.     It looks like they'll build 1 good shifting box out of the 2.  It was also wheel cylinder rebuilding time, but some seem to be a little too crusty to reuse, even after a good hone job.    The steel wheels that came with the truck are all cleaned up with new rubber mounted on 'em, and soon the Mexican blanket interior will go in.    You'll have to see the cool old stuff Kelle found under the seat!

2008 Performance Cars: V8 Alive and Kicking

Read more...Bloggers and car aficionados write that the V8 is a dying breed, and the eco-force would have us feel guilty for driving anything other than a hybrid, but at Ford, Dodge, Chevy, and Audi, the performance car is alive and well, and the 2008 and 2009 model years may be remembered not just for the greening of our garages, but also for a resurgence in modern muscle cars and high performance driving.

1966 GTO Blog #3 - Test Fitting L92 V8, 6 Speed
Read more...Tonight, we bolted the Street & Performance engine plates and oil pan to the L92 V8 and 6L80E six-speed automatic combination.    We were pleasantly surprised to see that it almost fits the car without modification, but we will need to do some more test fitting to be sure.

1966 GTO Blog #2 - Engine Removal
Read more... Time for the original engine to come out of the car.   After we pulled the front sheetmetal and yanked out the engine, we later were able to identify it as a date-code correct 1966 389, altough we couldn't find a VIN stamp on the block.   The car's VIN denotes it as a true GTO, however.   This motor was reported to be a rebuilt unit.   We didn't tear it down, but the multiple coats of spray paint indicate it has had a cosmetic, not mechnaical, restoration.

1971 Olds "S71" Trunk Floor & Wheelhouses
Read more... This video covers the installation of a new 3-piece trunk floor and inner and outer wheelhouses from YearOne.    We also installed a rear tail panel obtained from Desert Valley Auto Parts, which was removed from a rust-free donor car in Arizona.   The install is pretty straight forward, and Randy Stange takes us through the steps and the tools needed to do the job and have an undetectable repair when finished.  He used traditional MIG welding and the HTP Quickspot II spot welder for a clean installation.
