1969 "SS496" Blog 36 - Wetsanding & Top Frame

We're entering the final steps before spraying the outside of the SS496... that's the final panel alignment, and then wetsanding all the panels glass-smooth up to 600 grit.   Kelle and Scott installed the top frame, and Kelle also dropped in some more Dynamat to keep the car quiet.

Dyno Testing Splitter's 541 Pontiac

Project Splitter's 541 cubic-inch Butler Performance Pontiac engine recently enjoyed a break-in session on the Supoerflow dyno at Young's Performance.    The results?    How's 857 horsepower, wihtout the nitrous oxide?!?

1969 "SS496" Blog 34 - Front Sheetmetal
Tonight, we re-installed some of the front sheetmetal.   Even though the panels were pre-aligned on the jig, the jig had is different from the Chvelle's frame from a strength standpoint.   Even though the jig maintained the exact GM dimensions, the additional strength of the jig did not account for the amount of flex inherent to a 40 year old GM frame.    Be sure to allow some time to realign the panels if you built your car on a fixture!

1969 "SS496" Blog 33 - Back on frame!
The SS496 is looking like a car agian!   We finally mated the body back with the chassis using a body mount kit from OPGI.   We also re-attached the doors, deck lid, and some steering stuff.    Once the front sheetmetal is installed and the panels are all aligned, we'll finish the wetsanding and paint the car!

1969 "SS496" Blog 32 - Undercoating
The Chevelle's body has finally left the construciton jig for the last time, and now John spread 3M seam sealer on the bottom of the floors, followed by a liberal coating of 3M Body Schutz, a rubber-like undercoating designed to protect the car.
