1966 GTO Blog #5: The 4L65E Transmission Arrives
We were excited to receive the new GM 4L65E 4-speed automatic transmission from Bowler Performance Transmissions and test fit it under the GTO.    It looks to be a MUCH better fit than the 6L80E.   And, when combined with the GearsVendors overdrive unit and a Twist Machine Shrifter paddle shifter, this thing is always going to be in its happy RPM range.

HOLDEN FANS GET 60th ANNIVERSARY PRESENT
Feb. 29, 2008 - GM Holden today marked the diamond anniversary of its first all Australian car by unveiling a stunning two-door performance thoroughbred called Coupe 60.

Coupe 60 celebrates the six decades since GM Holden built the 48-215 at its Fishermans Bend plant in Port Melbourne, Victoria, and provides a glimpse of Holden’s future directions in design, engineering and emerging engine technologies. Exemplifying sports luxury, Coupe 60 is a pillarless concept car that explores the limits of Holden’s current rear-wheel drive capabilities, combining racing looks and technology into a road going sportscar experience. Its sophisticated appearance is delivered through simple and powerful design, highlighted by the pillarless construction and V8 supercar inspired cockpit layout and side-exiting chambered exhaust system with billet alloy tips.

1971 Olds "S71" - Epoxy Priming The Body
Bare steel bodies are cool to look at, but it's time to start the bodywork phase on the S71 Olds.   This time, we sprayed the underside of the car with PPG DCX 1791 etch primer and then DP90 epoxy primer.   Our painter Randy uses SATA spray guns and 3M safety masks and gloves with this stuff.   DP90 is black and tough, so it will form the base on the bottom of the car body.    The next step is to brew up some DP60 - a blue version of the same stuff - to shoot the inside and outside of the body.    Then the filler work begins!

Volvo Hot Rod
The very first Volvo car, the ÖV4 (later nicknamed Jakob) was built in 1927. Hot Rod maker Leif Tufvesson documented the original in detail before building his personal interpretation of the ÖV4, which became Hot Rod Jakob. The body of the classic vehicle has been built by hand from raw aluminium panels that were bent into their final shape using a hammer and English wheel, as it was done in the prototype workshop back in the 1920s. Leif Tufvesson has already won awards such as "Hot Rod of the Year" and "Most Innovative Car" in the U.S. After being unveiled at the Volvo Museum in Göteborg in February 2008, Hot Rod Jakob will be exhibited at the four Nordic winners of Volvo Best Partner 2007 before being presented at the 2008 SEMA show in Las Vegas in the USA in November this year.

1970 Pontiac Trans Am "Splitter": First Drive
Splitter is all back together and it was finally time to take to the streets!   Brett Evans toured us around with the 1970 Pontiac Trans Am clone through some quite backroads, but it's hard to be inconspicuous in a borderline race car!    We'll be at the track soon to get some real numbers, both at the drag strip and on the road course.

Racing Safety: Fire & Parachutes!
Proper safety gear can make you perform better by releasing stress and that little voice in the back of your mind.. the one that whispers questions to you when you're on the starting line.    Qustions like "What will you do if you crash and burn?" and "Are you sure the parachute is packed properly?"    Here, Nick Scavo takes us through some of the important safety gear and shows us the right way to pack a parachute so you can ignore that little voice and concentrate on winning.

Hans Device Explained
You've seen the HANS device strapped to racers' shoulders, but do you know how they developed?   Watch this and you will.

1971 Olds "S71" - Body Media Blasted
We completed most of the metal repairs on the "S71" Oldsmobile, but we knew there would be a few more surprises when we got the car body back from the media blaster.    Sure enough, the paint stripping process revealed a couple small holes in the floor, but nothing major.    This car was treated to both plastic media blasting and glass bead, and you can see the difference in the clean steel left behind.

Hot Wheels Designers Challenge

Hot Wheels will turn 40 this year, and to commemorate its iconic anniversary, the toy’s maker hosted a makeover competition. Automakers were asked to submit ideas combining their own brand with the toy’s motto of power, speed and performance. With no rules, federal regulations, speed limits or limits on prices, six designers came up with a slew of ideas inspired from both childhood memories and previous collections. Chevrolet designer Amaury Diaz Serrano came up with the Chevroletor, a vehicle inspired by Serrano’s own Hot Wheels collection and the 1957 Corvette SS. Other top designs included Ford’s Gangster Grin, the Dodge XP-07, the Honda Racer and Mitsubishi’s Double Shotz.
