Chris Craft / Pontiac G8GT Royal Purple SEMA 2008

The Royal Purple (http://www.royalpurple.com) booth at this year's SEMA show was jammed with people checking out a new supercharged Pontiac G8 GT (http://www.pontiac.com) pulling a matching Chris Craft Lancer GT (http://www.chriscraft.com/index.php?submenu=VideoLan20 src=directory view=boats srctype=detail back=boats refno=2 view=models_video%20) concept boat. Both machines showed off bright red exteriors with matching beige leather, gauge treatments, silver stripes, exhaust treatments, and wheels. The combination is exactly what you'd want to see parked in your driveway ready for a summer's day of driving and boating in high-style. The G8 GT's 6.0 V8 features a new Magnuson supercharger and upgrades to tow the boat with ease. We talked with Chris Craft VP of Engineering Bob Greenburg and GM Powertrain rep Brian Shipman about the projects.

1971 Olds S71 New Diesel Block

The engine choice has changed a little on the Olds S71 project. It's still an Olds motor,
but we've decided to run a 350 Diesel block based engine because of its much higher strength. We sourced a
DX block from a running 1981 Olds 98 Regency and pulled it apart to see
what's inside. These pics show the internals of the Diesel block and
the large webbing and overall meatier guts of this block. It's also a
factory roller lifter setup. Below you can see the stock 350
block (gold) for comparison. The new recipe as outlined by Bill Trovato at BTR
Performance (http://www.btrperformance.com) calls for an offset ground Olds 425 crank, high-strength
big block Chevy rods, custom pistons, MAHLE (http://www.mahle.com/) coated bearings, and a
trick Comp Cams (http://www.compcams.com) valvetrain to build a 428 cubic-inch Olds stroker. We're
running Edelbrock (http://www.edelbrock.com) aluminum heads and intake, an MSD ignition (http://www.msdignition.com) , and a
complete FAST EFI (http://www.fuelairspark.com) system on the car.

Here are some shots of the S71 Olds project's body being mounted back on the frame. We used a YearOne (http://www.yearone.com) body mount hardware and bushing kit to make the body sit properly on the frame and to replace all the old, crusty bushings.
ISIS Intelligent Wiring - SEMA 2008

Wiring a car can be a pain, especially chasing down shorted circuits and troubleshooting. ISIS (http://www.isispower.com/index.html) came up with the Intelligent Multiplex System which sends a digital signal to each item in the car, and triggers them to behave in a pre-programmed way. This allows you to program your switches in the dash to do things never before possible, trouble shoot the system with no tools, save weight, increase security, and reduce dangerous sparks and fire hazards. It's pretty high-tech, watch the video to learn more!

"MOTIV8R" Camaro SEMA 2008

Pro-Touring.com (http://www.pro-touring.com) is a tremendous online forum and resource for building and discussing Pro Touring style cars. The owner, Larry Callahan, has been patiently watching as hundreds of trick pro-touring style musclecars have been built and documented on his forum over the years, and his turn finally came. Working with the crew at Prodigy Customs (http://www.prodigycustoms.com) , Callahan and team created "MOTIV8R", a 1967 Camaro in just 45 days! The whole build was documented on the website in videos. And it's not a simple stock Camaro, either... by definition, pro touring cars need big brakes, wheels, trick suspension systems and lots of power. MOTIV8R boasts twin turbos, a 6 speed manual, Air Ride suspension, an Art Morrison subframe, killer Forgeline wheels, interior appointments featuring air conditioning and conformable seats, and a host of carbon fiber body parts and trim from Marquez Design. It's a winner, and the members on Pro-Touring.com are now motivated to build their own car!

Nelson Racing Interview SEMA 2008

Nelson Racing Engines (http://www.nelsonracingengines.com/) has been building high-level turbo engines for over a decade, and Tom Nelson and crew are not slowing down any time soon. Tom took a few minutes at the 2008 SEMA show to bring us up to speed on their new intake manifolds and their problem-solving asymmetric turbo housings. The turbo housings are one of those common sense ideas that will really simplify installation of twin turbo systems.

1965 Chevelle Chassis and Body Assembly

We've turned the corner on our 1965 Chevelle build, and we're finally starting to put the car back together. This time, we're re-assembling the newly painted chassis with a complete Hotchkis (http://www.hotchkis.net) Total Vehicle System suspension package, along with some newly restored brake hardware and new brake and fuel lines. The Hotchkis kit is nice because it comes with all the parts you need to improve the handling performance of you car including tubular rear suspension control arms, Bilstein (1965%20Chevelle%20Chassis%20and%20Body%20Assembly%20) shock absorbers, oversize front and rear sway bars, and Hotchkis lowering performance springs. The kit also includes all the hardware you need to put it together. This car came with a decent disk brake kit installed, so we simply ran the parts through our Eastwood (http://www.eastwoodco.com) sandblast cabinet and then powdercoated them with an Eastwood Hot Coat kit. We reassembled the brakes with new pads, bearings, and Royal Purple Synthetic Grease (http://www.royalpurple.com) . Next we installed new bushings and ball joints from OPGI, and then the parts were ready to bolt together. Our new brake lines were formed with a kit from YearOne (http://www.yearone.com) . Finally, we shot the underside of the body with some PPG (http://www.coopercolor.com) DP90 Epoxy black primer followed by a coat of 3M (http://www.mmm.com) Body Shutz for protection. The wheelhouses were coated with roll on Herculiner (http://www.herculiner.com/) truck bed liner to make them bulletproof, and then we mated the body to the chassis with the help of a body mount bushing kit from OPGI (http://www.opgi.com) .
