Seeing that I'm posting this on the 3-day Labor Day weekend here in the US, I've been spending alot of time in the garage. Unfortunately, I've been doing little stuff like cleaning and organizing. But it makes me woder about all the people doing 3-day weekend car projects. What are you working on?

Yesterday I replaced my worn manual steering box with a new Lee unit on my 68 Firebird and drove it like I stole it to a show 50 miles away. Today I started to detail the engine and bay on the 68. I also started tearing the old nasty stuff out of my 83 S10 donor truck. I am using the S10 as a chassis for my 52 chevy truck. My shop is a disaster and thats going to be a big project in its self to clean up that I will tackle Monday.

How did the Lee unit work out? Does it feel good?
And that's a cool '52 - we're thinking about a 5.3 / T-5 swap for Kelle's 54.

The unit really made the car feel tight. I can see why most cars don't run them in the auto X its a hand full in the twistys but it does what its told -you just need some strong arms and shoulders if you plan on really running in some turns. I think it will loosen up a little with some miles.
A 5.3 and a T5 would turn that truck into a really highway flyer. Are they hard to come by or pretty reasonable?
I went to a show today and did not work on the car or the mess in the shop but it was fun. I am up to 350 miles on the Firebird now and so far so good. I did find a belt alignment isssue I need to deal with today though so thats on my pre TN list now.

That's cool that the new steering box feels good. What was the motivation to go manual over power? Just less stuff on the engine? Do you have power vacuum brakes on that car?

The power unit I had was leaking and I wanted a nice clean look under the hood. I was also looking to shed some pounds off the frt of the car. At one point I had a purchased a fiberglass hood and inner fender wells manual steering and brakes. Since then I have gone back to metal body parts and power brakes. I think down the road I will go back to power steering and put on an AC unit as well. My introduction to the PT world has changed my perspective on what these cars can do and what to expect from them. Since I have been driving the car I realize can have power and handling and still be comfortable so that’s my goal.

I've said it before.. new cars spoiled us all. They drive, steer, handle, and stop so well that my ultimate goal is to have cool looking cars from the '60s that drive like new ones.

I hear you. I wonder if its possiable to equal some of the new stuff coming out with out spending a fourtune. Do you think a car like the Mustang GT500 could hang with one of the better PT cars on events at RTTH? I would pay money to see something like that.

What we found last year at RTTH III was that there were killer Pro-Touring cars that handled very well, then a C6 Corvette would whisp through the cones and hand it to everyone. The Air Ride Chevelles were outstanding on the track, but a stock Z06 is super-bad with the right driver. It takes a lot of work to make an old car run with the new 'vettes on the autocross, but that's the payoff, if you can do it!
