We're in the midst of a 12-volt conversion upgrade on the '54 and installing a GM 10SI style alternator.    You have to either change all the electrical devices - bulbs, battery, etc., to 12 volts, or install some sort of step-up converter to make them work right.     Here, Kevin rambles about the 1 vs. 3 wire alternator styles.
