Jake Mastny is a guy who knows what he wants. His friends all thought he was a little strange twenty-something years ago when he wanted a period correct 1950’s custom Mercury.
Instead, he built exactly what he wanted, and we’re all enjoying the results today. That’s right, this kustom was built in the 80s, way before the current retro craze took off.
This ’49 Mercury has all the tricks of a mid 1950’s kustom… lake pipes, Caddy hubcaps, and of course, a cool pinstriped flame job. It’s got the right look, the right stance, and the right goodies in all the right places.
Powering this time capsule is a punched-out flathead with trips, a hot cam, and a flamed backdrop. Mastny claims the car moves well for its size.
Driving the old sled can be tricky thanks to bias ply Tires and old-school lowered suspension, but that’s part of the fun. People used to throw these parts away… now they’re hot items on Ebay. Go figure. All we know is that we dig it, from the Appleton spots to the Von-You-Know-Who inspired stripe job. It’s holding up really well for being completed over 20 years ago.
