How to build an IVR- an Instrument Voltage Regulator E-mail

Original gauges will work provided they have the proper voltage required.    Here's how to create an updated electronic version of the old mechanical Instrument Voltage Regulator.

This device provides a +5 voltage signal to your factory Gauges in most musclecars from the 1960's. If you have a factory IVR that looks like figure 1 and your Gauges don't work, this new electronic replacement may be your cure. Here's what you need to build your own, just head to Radio Shack and pick up the following parts:

1. 276-1770A +5VDC Voltage Regulator - Fig. 2.
2. 276-1368 Heat Sink for TO-220 -Fig 3.
3. 272-1025 10 microfarad capacitor Fig. 4.

First off, solder the capacitor to the input lead of the new 5 volt regulator. The diagram is Fig. 5, and Fig. 6 shows the process.

Next, solder some extension leads onto the input and output terminals of the regulator - these will help you connect it to the wiring harness in your car.

Use heat shrink tubing to keep the connections insulated. Be careful not to burn yourself or your car down when heat shrinking, and disconnect the battery when you install it.

Then, attach the heat sink to the unit, and go install it in the car!
